Florianópolis (or simply "Floripa") absolutely deserves its proud nickname: The Florianópolis (Ilha da Magia). It is a unique corner of South America where the wild, pristine nature of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) harmoniously coexists with highly developed infrastructure, and quiet fishing villages sit right alongside some of the country's most prestigious beach clubs.

In this article, we will detail the main activities, attractions, and hidden gems of the island that are worth including in your itinerary. Whether you are visiting for a quick weekend getaway or planning to relocate permanently, there is always something incredible to do here.

1. Explore the Island's Best Beaches

Officially, there are 42 beaches on the island, and they differ drastically from one another in terms of atmosphere, waves, and infrastructure. The island is generally divided into three main beach zones:

  • East Coast (for surfers and youth): Praia Mole and Joaquina are famous for their powerful open ocean waves, dozens of surf schools, and an active youth party scene. This is where stages of the World Surf League (WSL) championships are held. Meanwhile, Barra da Lagoa has gentler waves, making it the perfect spot for beginners (renting a surfboard here costs about R$ 50–70 for two hours).
  • South Coast (wild nature and relaxation): Praia do Campeche, Morro das Pedras, and Matadeiro. These beaches offer breathtaking views of the famous Campeche Island. The water here is usually crystal clear but noticeably cooler due to Antarctic currents. These are ideal spots for peaceful walks and whale watching during the winter months (July to October).
  • North Coast (for families and calm relaxation): Jurerê Internacional, Canasvieiras, and Praia Brava. Here you will find the warmest water on the island, a gentle sandy entry into the ocean, almost no waves, and the most developed infrastructure featuring elite beach clubs (like P12 and Cafe de la Musique).

2. Hit the Hiking Trails (Trilhas)

Hiking (known locally as Trilhas) is a mandatory part of the Florianópolis cultural program. Much of the island's natural beauty is completely inaccessible by car.

  • Lagoinha do Leste Trail: The most picturesque and arguably the most challenging route. You have to hike over a mountain for about 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail leads to a completely wild beach. From the Morro da Coroa (Crown Hill) cliff, you get that iconic, breathtaking view of the bay seen on every other postcard from Floripa.
  • Costa da Lagoa Trail: A relaxed route along a massive freshwater lagoon. At the end of this two-hour forest path, authentic Azorean restaurants built on stilts await you, serving the freshest seafood. You can return via a municipal boat for just R$ 15.
  • Gravatá Trail: A short (about 40 minutes one way) but very spectacular trail leading to a secret beach tucked between Praia Mole and Joaquina. Paragliders frequently practice here.
  • Saquinho Trail: An authentic paved trail in the extreme south of the island, leading to an isolated fishing village that still has no roads for cars.
  • Naufragados Trail: A route through the dense Atlantic Forest to the southernmost point of Florianópolis. At the end of the trail, you will find the ruins of an ancient fort, a historic lighthouse, and a magnificent secluded beach.

3. Sandboarding on Joaquina Dunes (Dunas da Joaquina)

Between Lagoa da Conceição and Joaquina Beach lies a massive expanse of sand dunes that visually resembles a real desert. This is the best place in southern Brazil for sandboarding—sliding down the sand dunes on a specially designed board.

Renting a board for an hour is extremely cheap (around R$ 30–40), and it provides a ton of fun and laughter. It is especially beautiful here at sunset when the cooling sand changes color from golden to deep crimson, and the sun sets behind the Lagoa.

4. Visit Historic Neighborhoods (Azorean Heritage)

In the 18th century, Florianópolis was heavily settled by immigrants from the Azores (Portugal). Their rich heritage is still carefully preserved today in the architecture, ceramics, and amazing gastronomy:

  • Santo Antônio de Lisboa: One of the oldest neighborhoods on the island. Think narrow cobblestone streets, colorful colonial architecture, and the best oyster farms on the island. It is the most romantic place for dinner at sunset, offering views of the Hercílio Luz bridge.
  • Ribeirão da Ilha: A less touristy but equally charming historic center far to the south of the island. It also houses top-tier seafood restaurants (such as the famous Ostradamus). Oysters are pulled straight from the water and served immediately to your table.
  • Centro Histórico and Mercado Público: Take a stroll through the downtown historic center around the November 15th Square (Praça XV de Novembro) with its giant 100-year-old fig tree. You must visit the Public Market (Mercado Público). Grab a table outside, order traditional shrimp pastries (pastel de camarão), and enjoy a glass of ice-cold draft beer (chopp gelado).

Seasonal Activities Table

To help you better plan your vacation, check out the optimal seasons for different types of activities:

Activity Type Best Season Top Locations Approximate Cost (BRL)
Beach Relaxation (Swimming) December — March (Summer) Jurerê, Campeche, Canasvieiras Free (Chair rental R$ 30-50)
Surfing Year-round (Bigger waves in winter) Praia Mole, Joaquina, Matadeiro Board rental R$ 50, Lesson R$ 150
Whale Watching July — October (Winter/Spring) Armação, Morro das Pedras, South Free (from shore) or Boat tour R$ 100+
Hiking (Trilhas) April — November (Cooler weather) Lagoinha do Leste, Naufragados Free

5. Travel to the "Brazilian Caribbean" — Ilha do Campeche

Campeche Island is often referred to as the Brazilian Caribbean due to its incredibly turquoise, crystal-clear water with no waves and fine white sand. You can only get there by boat or a special schooner from Praia do Campeche or the Armação district.

The number of daily visitors is strictly limited by the government to protect the unique ecosystem, so it is highly recommended to book your excursion (and especially a seat on the boat) several days in advance. On the island, you can go snorkeling, see wild but friendly capybaras, and hike trails with ancient petroglyphs accompanied by a certified eco-guide.

📍 Lifehack from HelpinFloripa: If you want to go to Campeche in the summer (January or February), head to the pier by 8:00 AM. Boats depart as they fill up, and the daily visitor quota can be completely exhausted by 10:00 AM!

6. Active Recreation on Lagoa da Conceição

Lagoa da Conceição is the heart of the island and the main gathering spot for digital nomads, expats, and young people. Life is always buzzing on this massive saltwater lagoon:

  • Kitesurfing and windsurfing: Perfect conditions thanks to consistent, strong winds and the absence of waves.
  • SUP surfing and kayaking: A great, meditative way to explore the calm waters of the lagoon during the early morning hours.
  • Nightlife: In the evening, the district's main street (Avenida das Rendeiras) and the "Centrinho" fill with live music from numerous pubs, bars, craft breweries, and restaurants.

Summary

Florianópolis offers an incredible variety of entertainment for every taste: from wild hiking trails through the jungle and extreme surfing, to quiet, aesthetic dinners with the best oysters in colonial neighborhoods. The main rule on the Florianópolis is not to stay cooped up within four walls!
