# Cost of Living in Florianópolis in 2026: Expat Budget

Florianópolis is often called one of the best cities to live in South America. The safety, stunning nature, and developed infrastructure attract thousands of digital nomads. But this quality of life comes at a price: Floripa is one of the most expensive cities in Brazil (alongside São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro).

In this article, we will break down all the main expenses for a single person or a couple without children.

## 1. Rent and Utilities

Rental prices depend heavily on the neighborhood and proximity to the beach. The South (Campeche) and North (Jurerê, Canasvieiras) are traditionally more expensive than the Center and the mainland.

* **Studio / 1-bedroom apartment (Center or mid-tier areas):** R$ 2,500 – R$ 3,500 per month.
* **Modern apartment in Campeche (near the beach):** R$ 4,000 – R$ 6,000.
* **House (2-3 bedrooms) in Lagoa da Conceição:** from R$ 5,500.

### Hidden Housing Costs:
With long-term rentals (via QuintoAndar or directly), the advertised price often does not include:
* **Condomínio:** HOA / Building maintenance fee (security, pool, elevator). Can range from R$ 400 to R$ 1,500 per month.
* **IPTU:** Annual municipal property tax. The tenant usually pays it in installments (about R$ 100–250 per month).
* **Electricity & Water:** Around R$ 200–400 per month. Note that in summer, running the AC 24/7 can double your electricity bill.
* **Home Internet (Fiber Optic):** R$ 100–130 for 500 Mbps.

## 2. Supermarkets and Groceries

The city has budget warehouse chains (Fort Atacadista, Brasil Atacadista, Komprão) as well as premium supermarkets (Hippo, Angeloni).

An average weekly grocery basket for one person cooking at home costs **R$ 250 – R$ 400** ($50–$80).

**Sample Prices (2026):**
* Beef (Alcatra / Picanha): R$ 45–80 per kg
* Chicken breast: R$ 20–25 per kg
* Dozen eggs: R$ 10
* Milk (1 liter): R$ 5
* Local cheese (Queijo Prato / Mussarela): R$ 40–60 per kg
* Fruits (papaya, bananas, mango): R$ 5–10 per kg
* Bottle of decent Argentine/Chilean wine: R$ 45–70

## 3. Restaurants, Cafes, and Entertainment

Eating out in Floripa can be very budget-friendly or quite expensive.

* **Prato Feito (PF) or Buffet Livre:** A standard lunch at a local diner (rice, beans, meat, salad) costs **R$ 25–40**.
* **Cappuccino in a specialty coffee shop:** R$ 12–18.
* **Dinner at a mid-range restaurant (with wine/beer):** R$ 120–200 per person.
* **Going to a Churrascaria (All-you-can-eat BBQ):** R$ 90–150.
* **Gym membership (SmartFit):** R$ 130 per month.
* **Surf or kitesurf lessons:** R$ 150–200 per session.

## 4. Transportation

Florianópolis is a car-centric city. Living here without a car can be challenging.

* **Bus (TICEN/TILAG/TISAN):** R$ 6.00 via card or cash.
* **Uber / 99App:** A 15-minute ride costs around R$ 20–30. A ride from the Airport to Campeche is R$ 35–50; to the North of the island — R$ 80–120.
* **Car Rental (Localiza / Movida):** from R$ 120 per day or about R$ 2,500 per month.
* **Gasoline (Gasolina Comum):** R$ 5.80 – R$ 6.20 per liter.

## 5. Healthcare: Private Insurance vs SUS

Brazil has a free public healthcare system (SUS). It is available even to tourists, and the quality of emergency care is quite high (e.g., for injuries or accidents).

However, you might wait months for routine check-ups, ultrasounds, or specialist visits through SUS. Therefore, most expats buy a **Plano de Saúde** (Private Insurance) or pay out-of-pocket:
* **Private doctor consultation:** R$ 300–500.
* **Ultrasound or basic blood tests:** R$ 150–300.
* **Private insurance (Unimed, SulAmérica) for a 30-40 yo:** R$ 400 to R$ 800 per month (depending on the plan and copay).

## 6. Total Monthly Budget

So, how much money do you need for a comfortable life in Florianópolis for one person?

| Expense Category | Frugal Option (R$) | Comfortable Option (R$) |
|---|---|---|
| Rent (incl. all fees) | 2,800 (studio/room) | 5,500 (1-BR near ocean) |
| Groceries | 1,200 | 2,000 |
| Cafes & Dining Out | 500 | 1,500 |
| Transport (Uber/Car) | 400 | 1,500 (own car) |
| Healthcare | 0 (SUS only) | 600 (Plano de Saúde) |
| Gym & Entertainment | 300 | 800 |
| **TOTAL (BRL)** | **R$ 5,200** | **R$ 11,900** |
| **TOTAL (USD)** | **~$1,000 USD** | **~$2,300 USD** |

*Prices are for 2026. In the summer (December - February), short-term rental prices skyrocket 2-3 times, so it's best to sign long-term contracts during the off-season (May - October).*
